Profile

Located in a residential area in Willingboro, NJ the Garfield Park Academy is a private, non-profit, family-oriented school for children with learning and emotional challenges. Garfield Park Academy currently provides a complement of sixteen classes, comprised of students ages 5 through 21. Classes are grouped according to age, ability and emotional challenge, with classes for all, up to and including the gifted.

Art and Music Therapy, as well as Speech and Language Therapy are also available. Our comfortable educational environment is enhanced by seventeen spacious classrooms, all of which contain a minimum of six state-of-the-art computers. The state certified vocational program has an additional complement of specialized computers and other equipment necessary for vocational success. Some of our classrooms are using smart boards while others use other technology to teach the students.

Small class size and individual attention allow all children to succeed where they previously had difficulty. Each class of 10-11 students has a minimum of a teacher, a social worker and 2 aides. Group and individual therapy, as well as psychiatric intervention, remediate emotional difficulties. In addition, we train students in the social skills so necessary to survive in the work world, as well as offering a vocational program where students are provided with a job and monitored while they work toward their high school diploma.

Our highly qualified staff of master degreed clinical social workers, a clinical/school psychologist and two consulting psychiatrists, work closely with students and their families as they progress to their appropriate goal, whether it is returning to their sending school district or graduating from Garfield Park Academy. Either way, the most important factor is the student's future and how to best accomplish the established goals. Having our social workers located in an office in the classroom allows them 61/2 hours of access to their students each day.

At the Garfield Park Academy, we offer the best possible academic program within an excellent therapeutic setting in order to provide our students and families with a positive, successful experience.

Counseling and diagnostic services are provided through the Garfield Park Academy Clinic, which is approved by the State Department of Education. In addition, students receive the benefit of a State approved Vocational Program that provides a cooperative education and work component as well.

The school serves students from as far north as Somerset County to as far south as Salem and Atlantic Counties.
